“How Will Today’s Maharashtra Election Outcome Shape Tomorrow’s National Politics? | Four Key Points”
The Maharashtra Assembly election results will affect much more than just the state. They will impact everything from Hindutva politics to efforts for reforms and the balance of political alliances, influencing the future of national politics.
What happens in Maharashtra won’t stay there. The state has become a testing ground, and the results of the Assembly election will affect national politics in many ways. Early leads show that the BJP-led Mahayuti is winning the election, while the Congress-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) has been badly defeated.
The Mahayuti is leading in 230 out of the 288 Assembly seats, while the MVA is ahead in only 51. The BJP is leading in 132 of the 149 seats it contested, with an impressive strike rate of 89%.
Here are key outcomes that will come from the vast and diverse state of Maharashtra. This election was the biggest battle since the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and followed closely after the BJP’s success in Haryana.
1. It will decide the future of reforms, including the Waqf Bill.
In the recent Lok Sabha elections, the BJP secured a historic third term, though with fewer seats, relying on its NDA allies. Despite a smaller majority, the Modi government has continued its reform agenda, expanding the Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme and launching the United Pension Scheme. However, there were some setbacks, such as scaling back the Lateral Entry Scheme and the Broadcasting Services (Regulation) Bill, and reversing the decision to remove indexation benefits in the 2024-25 Budget.
A key reform was the Waqf Bill, which aims to overhaul the management of Waqf properties. Despite strong opposition from Muslim groups and other parties, the bill was sent to a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC), which has now submitted its report.
With the BJP’s strong performance in Maharashtra and Haryana, the government is likely to push ahead with the Waqf Bill and the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), potentially advancing both reforms in the upcoming winter session of Parliament.
2. Adani Issue and Winter Session Drama
Congress MP and Leader of Opposition, Rahul Gandhi, has promised a fiery Winter Session starting on November 25, with his main focus on the allegations against Adani Group Chairman, Gautam Adani, in a US bribery case.
However, after Congress’s disappointing performance in Maharashtra, where they secured only 18 seats, the party may lack the momentum for a strong attack. Rahul Gandhi had previously accused the Modi government of crony capitalism, tying it to the Adani Group, at multiple election rallies.
3. Mix of Populist Schemes and Infrastructure Push
In Maharashtra, infrastructure projects played a key role in the election. The Congress-led MVA tried to win votes by offering cash incentives, pushing the Mahayuti to promise more, including the Ladki Bahin Yojana. However, the NDA partners focused on a balanced approach with infrastructure development. The Mahayuti will continue projects like Mumbai road concretization, Mahalaxmi Race Course park, and the Gargai Pinjal water projects. Had the MVA won, they might have disrupted the Dharavi redevelopment project. Ultimately, the results show how voters are influenced by both populist schemes and real development.
4. BJP Leading in Direct Fights with Congress
The Congress’s poor performance in Maharashtra highlights its struggles in direct contests with the BJP. The results of 76 seats in Maharashtra, where the BJP and Congress faced off, were closely watched. Of these, 36 were in Vidarbha, a region dominated by the BJP-led Mahayuti.
The rise of the BJP and the decline of Congress is clear in these direct battles, which show the strength and popularity of each party. In direct contests, Congress’s success rate increased from 8% in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections to 30% in 2024. Meanwhile, the BJP’s success rate dropped from 92% to 70%.
However, in Haryana in October, where the BJP and Congress were in a straight fight, Congress couldn’t stop the BJP from winning a historic third term. The BJP’s victory in Maharashtra further confirms that it is much stronger than Congress in direct fights. This victory boosts the BJP’s confidence for the 2025 elections, starting with the Delhi Assembly elections in February.
